Transformers. - A transformer or like apparatus is cooled by a fan 6 carried by a motor 1 so placed in the core of the apparatus that it can be driven by the main magnetic flux or by magnetic leakage from the apparatus. The application to a three-phase transformer is show in Fig. 1, the motor being mounted between the ends 2 of the limbs 3 carrying the windings 4. The motor may be either a shortcircuited rotor or may carry a continuous current. When the transformer is used for feeding a mercury-vapour rectifier 20, the latter may be mounted above the transformer, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the current of air caused by the fan cools both the transformer and the rectifier.
