Abstract

Starting. - Compressed air or gas for starting is distributed to the cylinders by an arrangement comprising beat valves e, one for each cylinder, an engine-driven cam shaft a, and a handactuated rocking shaft c carrying arms k, m which pivotally support tappet fingers o, p; enlargements on the fingers are interposed between the valves and their cams by movement of the shaft c, which at the same time brings an arm q into engagement with a rocker arm r pivoted at s for effecting opening of a main air valve T with a large mechanical advantage. The non-return valves 31, Fig. 11, on the cylinder heads are provided with a truncated end 30 facing towards the combustion space, in order to avoid pitting and deposition of carbon. The compressed air is supplied to a reservoir by a pump driven at will by the engine, the pump shaft being in alignment with an engine-driven shaft, to which it is connected by a positive clutch such as that described in Specification 182,513, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variable-speed &c.]. The cam shaft is parallel to the engine-driven shaft, from which it is driven at half engine speed through spur gearing. Specification 22693/14 is also referred to.
