Abstract

Pressure-relieving devices for fluids; safety valves.- In a casing or enclosure for instruments or apparatus subject to excessive internal pressure such as switch casings and cases for instruments and apparatus used in coal mines, the body and cover of the casing are provided with broad machined flanges a, b, which are normally held in contact by relief bolts d constructed to allow a limited separation of the cover from the body upon the internal pressure becoming excessive, the escaping gases being cooled by the broad flanges. The relief bolts d are provided with boxes f enclosing springs k which press on the bolt-heads c, the boxes being positively limited in their upward movements by washers g to limit the separation of the casing flanges b, and the springs ensuring immediate closing of the flanges when the pressure returns to normal. A wire ring m is sprung into a groove formed in the shank of the bolt after the box f, washer g and spring k have been assembled thereon. A centrally-arranged relief bolt may be fitted to the covers of small instruments, while two bolts on opposite sides of an oval plate may serve on other cases. Four or more bolts are required for rectangular covers of switch casings &c.
