Transformers.-A device for protecting transformers and other apparatus which operate in an insulating liquid comprises a switch operated by the increase in pressure produced in the space above the liquid by gases formed by disturbances in working, the arrangement being such that no gases escape through the operation of the switch. Fig. 1 shows a form in which increase of pressure raise a cap b and trips a cut out device d. The ventilating devices g attached to the casing do not provide a quick enough escape for the gases to prevent operation. According to a modification, a monometric device is attached to the casing either above or below the liquid and serves to close contacts on increase of pressure. Fig. 4 shows a further modification in which the casing has flap valves k which open to relieve very great pressure but remain shut for the pressures required to operate the valve contact devices provided in tubes i.
