Axles. - In a pair of wheels mounted on a composite axle, the wheels are secured by an external detachable cap or washer placed on the inner axle part and abutting the outer side of the hub of the wheel attached to the outer axle part, the washer or cap being held by a bolt or split pin passing through it and the extension of the inner axle part. The solid axle b1 is integral with the wheel b2 and is inserted through the hollow axle a1 to which the wheel a2 is secured and projects beyond it. A washer or cap c is secured to the solid axle b1 by a bolt or split pin passing through both the washer and axle. In the case of a cranked axle, the sleeve of the loose wheel abuts against the crank cheek, and it may have a bearing-surface provided on its circumference. The loose wheel is secured to the solid axle by a washer similar to c.
