Axles and axle structures.-In rear axles of the kind in which the .driving-axle 3 normally transmits the weight on the axle casing 2 to the road wheels, and in which an outer bearing 1 is provided to transmit the load directly from the axle casing to the wheels, the ring member 6 of this bearing is formed cf T- section with inwardly and outwardly directed flanges 7, 18 respectively. These flanges bear against the brakedrum 8 and are secured with the latter to the road wheel by bolts 13. The usual internal bearing between the axle 3 and the casing may be retained, but if it is dispensed with, the casing is strengthened by a liner 16 provided with an oil-retaining pad 17. The bearing 1 is protected from dust &c. by a metal cap 15.
