Abstract
182,509. Healey, T. G. P. March 1, 1921. Belts.-A belt for use with V-grooved pulleys such as are employed for dynamo or fan drives on motor-vehicles &c. comprises a. connected series of wedge-ended segments of leather or similar flexible material bent into arched form so that the edges of the wedge ends engage the pulley groove whilst the middle portions forming the crowns of the arches provide for transverse flexibility. The belt shown in Fig. 1 is formed from a series of blanks of the shape shown in Fig. 4, by bending them to arched formation and riveting or otherwise connecting abutting wedge ends c. For heavier drives a continuous strip or band of material e as shown in Fig. 7 may be riveted or otherwise secured to the crowns d of the segments ; which may be formed from a continuous strip a<4> as shown or from separate blanks as in the previous example. The band e may be of leather, canvas, balata, or other belting material, of rubber &c. strengthened by canvas, cords, wire, &c., or of thin strip steel or other metal. In a further modification, the arched segments may be secured to the underside of a pitch-chair or other flexible chain, or as shown in Fig. 12, a pitchchain k may be threaded through the segments, which are pierced for the purpose.
