Abstract
181,997. Hrib, G. July 12, 1921. Propelling; regulating altitude.-An auxiliary propeller 27, which is declutchable from the engine, is carried by a shaft 20 mounted in an upright 21, formed of two halfsections with packing between their faces, and provided with recesses and thrust bearings 24 to engage with collars 23 on the shaft. The engine 10 has a gear case 14, the extension 13 of which braces the upright 21. The engine drives the auxiliary propeller 27 through a clutch 15 and worm gear 18, 19. To prevent rotation of the propeller 27, a rod 28, having a yoke 30, may be slid vertically into engagement with the propeller by a rack-andpinion mechanism operated by a handle 34, and may be held in position by a stop member engaging a tooth of the pinion. The upright may be in the form of an inverted-L projecting forwardly so that the auxiliary propeller rotates on a horizontal shaft, which is provided with thrust bearings as above and is driven from the vertical shaft by bevel-gearing.
