Circular machines.-Vertically striped or spotted effects are obtained on a machine with stationary needle cylinder by the use of two threads one of which can be withheld from certain needles by the action of a pattern-controlled cam 2 which is movable both horizontally and vertically and depresses these needles so that they miss the yarn not required for striping. The striping needles have butts of different lengths and/or different positions. The cam 2 is mounted for vertical movement into or out of action on a slide 3 movable horizontally in a bracket 4 secured to the rotary cam box 1, and' is attached to a spring-pressed vertical plunger 5. A horizontally slidable plate 7, a shoulder on which engages a vertically movable pivoted arm 9 carrying a roller 11, moves the cam 2 vertically downwards, the plate 7 being pressed inwards by passage in contact with a cam-plate 13. The plate 13 can be placed in two positions by means of connections such as 17 operated from a pattern chain 18. The higher position allows the plate 13 to act on the plate 7 and depress the cam 2 and when in the lower position the plate 13 releases the plate 7 and cam 2 from engagement with locking catches. The horizontal movement ot the cam 2 is derived from the chain 18 by means of connections such as 25 which place a cam-plate 24 similar to the cam-plate. 13 in the path of the slide 3.
