Direct air-pressure apparatus, automatic; aircompressing devices, application of; raising by stages; measuring-devices, applications of; utilizing air repeatedly.-In plants in which an inert gas contained in a storage cylinder is used in a closed piping circuit and is successively admitted into and expelled from two auxiliary vessels in order to force liquid from one to the other a compressor is alternately in communication through a fourways tap with the first auxiliary vessel in connection with the main tank and with the second or measuring vessel and the supply pipe, which is on the piping providing for the passage of liquid between the two vessels. By putting pipes 12<a> and 14 and 12 and 14<a> respectively into communication, gas is withdrawn from the vessel 2<1> by the compressor 4, and compressed into the vessel 2<2> causing liquid to be drawn up from the tank 1 into the vessel 2<1>. Pipes 14 and 14<a> and 12 and 12<a> are then put into communication and gas is then drawn from vessel 2<2> into the vessel 2<1>, causing liquid to rise from the vessel 2' through the pipe 13 into the vessel 2<2>. The inter-connected taps 53, 54 are then turned to cause the pipes 12<a>, 14 and 14<a> to communicate and short-circuit the compressor. The liquid is drawn off from the vessel 2<2> by tap 37 with the compressor working whereby the vessel 2' is simultaneously filled from the tank 1. The vessel 2<2> when empty is again filled from the vessel 2<1> as above. Valve 59 allows automatic adjustment of the pressure on each side of the compressor. To put the apparatus in the non-operative position, pipes 14 and 14a and 12 are put into communication as shown in Fig. 5 and valve 51 opened and all liquid flows by gravity into the tank 1 when the pressure should become atmospheric. The apparatus is filled with inert gas before working, from cylinder 28, by special manipulation of the apparatus. Tap 58 is provided to adjust the pressure. The vessel 2<2> has a liquid level gauge 52.
