Abstract
180,870. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). April 28, 1921. Transformers.-In casings for electrical apparatus such as transformers submerged in oil or other insulating liquid, in which the main casing 10 is connected by a pipe 20 with an auxiliary casing 15 to allow for the expansion or contraction of the oil, a sump 33 in which water may collect is provided in the auxiliary casing. The auxiliary casing is also provided with a " breather " comprising a pipe 32 passing through the sump, and connected to the atmosphere through a chamber 31 containing dehydrating- material such as calcium chloride. The sump is provided wth a tap 34, and a valve 21, which can be closed when it is desired to open the main casing, may be placed in the pipe 20. The main casing may also be provided with an escape pipe 24 closed by an easily-ruptured metallic or other diaphragm 25, in order to provide an emergency exit for excessive gas pressures which may be suddenly generated by transient disturbances such as short-circuits. A safety-valve 35 may be provided on the auxiliary casing 15.
