Abstract
200,362. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). July 12, 1922. Transformers. - A casing 1 for electrical apparatus, such as transformers, is connected with an expansion chamber 3 and is completely filled with oil or other cooling liquid which extends into the chamber 3, means responsive to pressure within the casing being provided for varying the effective size of the opening between the casing and the expansion chamber. In the form shown, a valve 4 is provided in the pipe 2 connecting the casing with the expansion chamber, the normal expansion and contraction of the liquid in the casing 1 taking place through a small hole 5 in the valve. On the occurrence of a sudden increase of pressure in the casing, due to a short-circuit or other fault, the valve opens towards the expansion chamber and the pressure in the casing 1 is instantly relieved. The pressure in the expansion chamber is limited to safe values by providing the chamber with a large outlet 10 closed by an easily ruptured diaphragm 9. The. tube 2 preferably extends above the bottom of the chamber 3 which is provided with a trap 8 in which water may collect.
