Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.- A governor for air compressors &c. comprises a control valve which at a given pressure admits fluid to a member controlling the inlet valve of the compressor, and a reinforcing-member having differential areas which upon initial movement of the control valve is actuated by fluid pressure on one area to move in one direction assisting the control valve and on further movement of the control valve is returned by pressure on the other area. The governor shown comprises a ball valve C subject to the receiver pressure through a pipe D and to the atmosphere through a passage E through which the valve stem passes, its end pressing against a weighted lever F. Excessive pressure opens the valve against the pressure of the lever and allows air to pass through a pipe G to the top of a plunger J to which a fork K is connected adapted to press the inlet valve L open. At the same time, air is also admitted to the top of a piston N, the stem of which is thereby forced down on the lever F and assists the action of the control valve. The lower side of the piston N is corinected by a pipe Q to passages controlled by the plunger J so that normally the pressure below the piston N is atmospheric, but depression of the plunger admits compressed air and forces the piston N back again. A pocket or choke valve may be provided between the pipe Q and the piston N to delay the return of the valve.
