Abstract

178,686. McPherson, J. S. March 23, 1921. Piston packing.-In compound piston rings of the type comprising a transversely-divided outer ring 2 contained in a groove 3 formed in a split inner ring 1, the latter has projections.4 of the groove-sides at one end, lapping a projection 5 of the groove-bottom on the other end. Adjustment of the diameter of the outer ring is effected by attaching to the ends of the outer ring wedgeshaped projections 9, 10 which pass through a slot 11 in the inner ring, and engage in a tapered groove 12 of a member 13, axial movement of which forces the wedges together or allows them to separate. This axial movement is effected by a screw 19 engaging in a threaded portion 14 of the member 13 which is slidably mounted in the bearing 16 attached to the inner ring 1.
