Abstract

The reaction tube for the catalytic synthesis of ammonia under hyper-pressure conditions is made of mild steel having a low carbon content, which is practically impermeable to the gases at the high temperatures employed. The following is an example of the percentage composition: Silicon 0.018, sulphur 0.09, carbon 0.098, manganese 0.93, iron the remainder. It is necessary to provide the part of the tube subjected to the highest temperature conditions with separate strengthening rings or a sleeve made of a resistant metal. Specification 174,041 is referred to.
