Abstract

120,554. Leamon, W. G. Nov. 8, 1917, [Convention date]. Purifying processes.-Relates to eliminating sulphuretted hydrogen from natural gas, coke oven gas, producer gas, illuminating gas or the like. The gas preheated to a temperature of about 300‹ C, is supplied with a small quantity of air sufficient to oxidise the hydrogen of the impurity but not necessarily the sulphur and is passed over heated pumice, firebrick, broken pottery or the like, wherein the oxidation occurs. Proceeding immediataly to cold scrubbers or absorbents the sulphur vapour is condensed or fixed. The pumice &c. may carry metal catalysts as platinum, nickel or the like. The operation may be conducted with the gas at enhanced pressure. The preheater comprises a folded iron pipe 3 in a jacket or furnace 2 and the oxidiser comprises an iron U-tube 6 fitted with the pumice 7, in a furnace 8.
