Abstract

177,641. Dawson, W. A., Dawson, G., and Clark, W. Jan. 24, 1921. Self-driving machines.-A self-driving motor of the unbalanced-wheel type comprises a wheel a free to revolve round a centre shaft f, Fig. 1, actuated by weights d which are placed in slots in the arms c and are arranged to run in an elliptically-shaped race e<1>. The guide-rails e constituting the race e<1> are arranged to be rotatable about the axis of the wheel a, rotation through 90‹ from the position shown producing a balance of the weights d relative to the wheel; and a further rotation serving to reverse the mechanism. In another arrangement, weights d, Fig. 4, pivoted to the wheel a at c are controlled by links h fixed to an eccentric strap g; and in a modification of this arrangement, the eccentric carrying the strap g is replaced by a crank.
