Abstract

Band.-The band is mounted upon a fixed rim having flanges for retaining the band and is expanded by a sliding wedge also formed with flanges for retaining it in position with respect to inclined surfaces on the ends of the band. The band 3, which may be of spring steel with a braking-surface of fibre or leather, is mounted between flanges c, d on a fixed rim 10 which it grips in the disengaged position and is expanded by a wedge 6 engaging the inclined surfaces of pieces 5, 5<a> on the ends of the band. Figs. 1 and 2 show the wedge arranged to be moved radially with respect to the band 3 and drum 2 by means of a direct pull connection attached at 7. As shown in Fig. 8, the wedge is moved axially by means of a lever 13. An arrangement in which the levers 13 of a pair of brakes are connected for simultaneous actuation to a single pull rod is shown. The wedge 6 is guided on the pieces 5, 5<a> by flanges h. The band is held against rotation by a pin 9 thereon passing through a slot x in the rim 10.
