Abstract
278,525. Webb & Co., Ltd., H. C., and Chinn, H. Oct. 7, 1926. Clutches, friction.-Clutch or braking mechanism, particularly suitable for use upon a motor cycle or other vehicle, comprises an internally expanding steel brake or clutch band a, the extremities a<1>, a<2> of which are twisted at right-angles to the plane of the metal for attachment and operation purposes. The end a<1> is secured by bolts a<3> to a stationary plate b which also carries a crank d operated by a lever e, the crank pin d<1> engaging the end a<2> of the brake band through a slot connection a<4>. The end a<1> may be slotted at a<5>, Fig. 3, and pivotally engage a stud a<3> on the casing b, or an additional stud a<3> may be adapted to engage in a slot a<6>. The end a<1> may be slotted at the end to rest on a stud a' and guided in the direction of its length by two studs bearing against the sides, or the end a<1> may slide in a channel-section member. The end a<1> may also rest on studs engaging a parallel and inclined slot respectively. The ends a<1>, a<2> may be connected by a spring. As applied to clutch mechanism for transmitting rotary motion, both the carrier plate b and the drum c may be capable of rotation, the drive being taken, for instance, to the free extremity a<2> of the clutching band a from the axis. of rotation.
