Abstract

174,412. Hargreaves, P., and Johnson, J. E. Oct. 18, 1920. Condenser systems.-In a condenser system in which a main condenser A is exhausted by a steam-jet air-pump comprising two jets b, b<1> in series separated by a water-jet condenser B in which condensate from the main condenser A is used as cooling medium, the effluent from the condenser B passes through a U-tube 1 and thence either by a pipe 2 into the condenser A or by a pipe 3 into a tank 4 at the base of the condenser. The tank 4 is divided by a weir, which may be adjustable, into a retaining-compartment 6, Fig. 2, and a discharge compartment 7. The compartment 6 contains a float which closes a valve 15 on the outlet of the pipe 3 when the level falls, due to the engine being on light load and the supply of condensate small. The effluent from the condenser B then passes through pipe 2 and is cooled before being mixed with the condensate in the tank 4. In an alternative arrangement, the steam-supply to the first jet b is controlled by the float so as to be reduced when the float falls.
