Abstract

Surface condensers; combined jet and surface condensers; condenser systems. - In condensers for power plant involving the use of steam, vapours of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, mercury &c. in which the vapours pass across a nest of cooling tubes, condensate is discharged through a liquid seal in order to counterbalance the diminution of pressure due to the resistance of the tubes, and is heated by being brought into contact with steam in the condition in which it enters the condenser or with exhaust steam from other sources. Condensate from a condenser 2, Fig. 2, passes down a pipe 3 and Hows over a haffle 13 into the chamber 12 from which it is withdrawn by a condensate pump 10. Steam enters the chamber 12 by a pipe 7, and air &c. is withdrawn from the chamber by a pipe 37 connected to the condenser near the air-withdrawal pipe 6. When steam and hot drips from auxiliary machinery are used for the re-heating, the pipe 7 may be a narrow pipe serving to equalize the pressures. The re-heating may be effected in a separate chamber 8, Fig. 4, to which condensate flows by the pipe 3. The liquid is raised bv an ejector 15, operated by water from the condensate pump, into an upper compartment 20 from which it falls as spray through steam admitted by a pipe 7. A pipe connection 21 serves for de-aerating. The condenser may be divided by partitions 26, Fig. 5, so as to leave a central compartment 29 down which condensate raised by the ejector 15 is sprayed for re-heating.
