Feed-water, supplying.-In a boiler feed-supply system comprising a condenser, a condensate extracting pump, an atmospheric feed tank, a direct contact heater or its equivalent, a booster pump and a feed pump, the heater h is arranged between the feed tank f and the booster pump d, and a vacuum is maintained in the heater corresponding to the feed temperature, the heated feed being freed from air and non-condensible gases and delivered under pressure through a closed pipe to the feed pump t. Air and gases are drawn away from the heater through a small-bore pipe 2 opening into the condenser a. The water is heated by exhaust steam supplied to the heater from the pumps d, t. The pipe s between the pumps d, t is fitted with a loaded valve o, which opens when the pressure in the pipe rises above a certain point, and allows the feed to pass through a pipe 4 back to the feed-tank.
