Abstract

Mercuric oxide obtained by electrolysis of alkalis and oxy-salts with a mercury anode, and containing up to 50 per cent of mercury is purified by distillation of the mercury at a temperature below 500 DEG C., say 300-450 DEG C. Air or other gas containing or yielding oxygen may be passed through the distillation chamber to reduce the vapour pressure of the mercury; the smaller particles of mercury are thereby oxidized.
