Abstract

173,746. Archer, R. S., and Jeffries, Z. Jan. 4, 1921, [Convention date]. Alloys.-Castings of aluminium alloys containing from 2 to 5 per cent of copper are improved by heat-treatment. The treatment is applicable also to aluminium-copper alloys containing silicon either in the small amounts occurring as impurities in commercial aluminium or in subtantial amounts, e.g. 3 to 15 per cent. In order to avoid as far as possible the formation of crystalling needles of FeAl, due to the presence of iron in commercial aluminium silicon is added where necessary to ensure an excess of silicon some of which combines with the iron thereby reducing the quantity of FeAl3 formed. Zinc and/or magnesium may also be added to the alloys to be treated. In the preparation of the alloys the temperature is kept as low as possible, preferably below 750‹ C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the treatment of aluminium alloys containing silicon without copper and states that alkali metals may be added to the alloys. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 19282/05 and 159,852 [both in Class 72, Iron, &c.]
