Abstract

172,178. Thomas, J. G. P. Oct. 5, 1920. Universal joints.-In universal joints of the kind in which a ring of metal or other flexible material is connected to pins on the driving and driven shafts, the ring is built up of complete central rings 1 and overlapping angle-pieces 2, the whole completed by washers 3 and secured together at the angles by rivets 4 or by welding, so that the rings diminish in thickness from the driving and driven pins 5 to points midway therebetween. Where shafts 5, 6, Fig. 4, are permanently out of alignment, two such rings 9, 10 interconnected by a central coupling-piece 11 are employed equidistant from the intersection of the shaft axes. A spherical head 13 on the shaft 5 engages a seat on the shaft 6. A spherical casing 14 in two parts surrounds the joint.
