Abstract

171,921. Cattley, L. de M. Jan. 10, 1921. Electrodes.-An accumulator electrode consists of equal parts of lead oxide and lead sulphate mixed with cooked potato and made into a paste with sulphuric acid. 20 per cent of potato may be used. The paste is moulded into plates, pressed and dried and then wrapped in paper and heated in a crucible packed with soot to exclude air. The temperature is raised, gradually to 100‹ C. and then more rapidly to 535-550‹ C. and finally lowered gradually to 50‹ C. The electrode is then removed and purified by connecting it to a zinc plate in a bath of sulphuric acid or by placing it in a bath in conjunction with a positive electrode and charging until the evolution of sulphuretted hydrogen ceases. The electrodes. may be cylindrical or flat and solid or hollow. Specification 19109/13 is referred to.
