Abstract

150,810. Pouchain, A. June 6, 1919. Amalgamating. - A zinc electrode is protected against the action of sulphuric acid when the battery is on open circuit by the following treatment. The zinc plate after amalgamation is made the cathode in a bath containing 5 per cent of magnesium sulphate and 5 per cent of mercuric sulphate acidified with sulphuric acid and containing a small proportion of ammonium sulphate. A current is then passed for about an hour, whereupon the plate is removed and dried. It is then wrapped in a sheet of greased paper. The electrode is preferably perforated.
