Abstract
185,797. Garbutt, W. O. May 11, 1921. Electrodes, regenerating; electrolytes.-Storage battery electrodes are desulphated by replacing the acid electrolyte by a strong solution of an alkaline hydroxide or peroxide and charging the battery in the usual way, the solution being maintained in an alkaline condition during the process. If the solution becomes acid it is replaced by fresh alkaline solution. Suitable liquids are solutions of sodium hydroxide or peroxide having a specific gravity of about 1.1 or corresponding to ten per cent of alkali. When the process is completed the alkaline solution may be retained in the cell and used as the electrolyte or it may be replaced by the usual acid electrolyte. If desired the electrodes may be removed from the battery cell and the treatment conducted in a separate vessel.
