Abstract
171,189. Dent, C. H. Aug. 13, 1920. Skips.-A skip, of the type having two sections, provided with inwardly-sloping bottom plates, and hinged together so that they close normally under their own weight, but open automatically under the weight of the contents on the release of a catch, is constructed with the pivot mounted above the top of the container and arranged so that it does not carry the weight of the loaded skip and contents. In the illustrated form, the skip, formed in halves pivoted together at b, is provided with rectangular ends and sloping bottom plates f. It is held in the closed position, when loaded, by arms g pivoted to one section and engaging the other section by means of notches k. Levers o, pivoted on the shaft o<1>, rest on the upper edges of the arms and prevent them from becoming unlatched by vibration. At the dumping-point two cords are pulled to release the latching-mechanism and allow the sections to separate under the weight of the load. The one cord operates the lever p to turn the levers o into a horizontal position. The other cord, which is a.ttached to a lever fixed on the shaft m, raises the forked levers l until the notches k are freed from engagement. The suspension links c relieve the pivot from the weight of the loaded skip and contents.
