Abstract

242,471. Barnard, D. J. Dec. 16, 1924. Grab-buckets.-Relates to a grab for use with a transporter crane, supported directly from the trolly during traversing and opening, and operated by a single electric motor for traversing, opening and closing. The grab is suspended from the trolly 1 by ropes 30, and is opened and closed by ropes 32 which support the cross-bar 16. Gravity catches 7, 8 keyed on a spindle 6 on the trolly co-operate with pins 10, 11 on the grab-head and a gravity catch 9 loose on the spindle 6 co-operates with a pin 14 connected with the cross-beam. The gravity catches 7, 8, 9 are weighted so as to fall out of engagement with the pins, but they are held in the operative position by spring-pressed rods 17, 24 except when these rods are depressed by ramp-rails 22, 29 at the outer and inner ends of the transporter beam respectively. As shown in Fig. 2, the grab is at the outer end of the beam and has been raised with the buckets closed. The rod 17 is depressed, but the rod 24 brings the catch 9 beneath the pin 14 to support the buckets. As the grab is traversed, the rod 17 is released from the ramprail 22, and the catches 7, 8 take under the pins 10, 11. At the inner end of the beam the rod 24 is depressed by the ramp-rail 29 as shown in Fig. 4, and on hauling in the rope 32 slightly, the catch 9 falls out of engagement with the pin 14 so that the grab may be opened by paying out the rope. When the open grab is traversed again to the outer end of the beam, the catch 9 returns to the operative position in readiness to engage with the pin 14 when the grab is closed, and the rod 17 is depressed so that the catches 7, 8 fall free from the pins 10, 11 when the grab is slightly raised by hauling in the ropes 30. Means may be provided whereby the ramp-rail 29 depresses both rods 17 and 24 so that the grab may be lowered before discharging.
