Abstract

251,711. Sedgwick, C. H. Feb. 17, 1925. Grab-buckets.-Relates to grabs of the kind in which the lower pulley-block e moves between the grab-head d and the cross-beam b to which the buckets a are hinged, and the block e is connected to the cross-beam by latch mechanism which is engaged and disengaged automatically to permit the closing and opening of the buckets. The block e moves on a central telescopic guide comprising a rod j carried centrally on the grabhead, and two sleeves k, l attached respectively to the pulley-block e and the cross-beam b. A cylindrical latch-block h is attached to the sleeve l which is mounted in the cross-beam so as to be free to turn about its own axis. The latch-block h has wedge-surfaces i co-operating with rollers g on the pulley-block e. The pulley-block carries sheaves n arranged as shown in plan in Fig. 4 for the single hoisting and operating chain m. The latch-block h tends to turn to the position in which the wedges i will not engage the rollers g, under the action of a torsion spring s acting on the spindle o and bevel gears p. When the buckets open, the hinge pin a<1> which is secured to one of them turns the spindle o, through a oneway drive r, so as to bring the latch block h to the position shown and put the spring s under torsional strain. When the pulley-block e is then lowered, the rollers g engage the wedge-surfaces i, the block twisting on the telescopic guides until the rollers swing back under the wedges i which then lock the block to the cross-beam. On hauling in the chain, the buckets are closed, the hinge pin a<1> moving so that the drive r will not obstruct the action of the spring s in releasing the latch when the grab is again lowered to the ground or raised to engage with a suspended ring r. To open the grab by dumping, it is lowered to the ground and the chain slackened. When pressure between the parts g, i is relieved, the latch-piece h is turned by the spring s so that on hauling in the chain, the rollers g rise clear of the wedge i and the buckets are opened as far as is permitted by a stop on the cross-beam. To open the grab at the top of the lift. it is raised until the suspended ring v engages and depresses a rod u in the grab-head, acting on a slider t in the pulleyblock having a wedge-shaped end t<1> to engage and turn the latch-block. The chain m passes through a guiding sleeve m<1> having its mouth nearly in line with the pivots c<1> of the links c, so as to reduce the strains on the parts when the grab rests on the dump in an inclined position.
