Abstract
185,138. Hollick, W. J. Feb. 24, 1921. Addition to 134,968. Grab-buckets; grab-forks. The coupling, mechanism. for operating the grab described in the parent Specification, comprising a member carrying fixed pins which co-operates with a rotary cam-carrying member, is modified by providing retractable pins thereby enabling the coupling-members to be separated for direct dumping of the load without relative rotation of the coupling-members, while retaining the feature of relative rotation to produce the engagement of the coupling. To facilitate the operation of the catches the rotary cam-carrying member is mounted on the bucket frame instead of on the lower sheave block, while the pin-carrying member is transferred from the frame to the block. Fig. 1 shows one construction in which the pins or catches n engage the rotary cam-carrying member 0 in the manner described in the parent Specification when the lower sheave block q is lowered. The pins can be withdrawn against the action of springs by tension applied to the cords 12. Weights may be used in lieu of springs. In a modified construction the outer ends of the catches abut against the interior of a coned sleeve, which normally retains them in the acting position, but permits the load to retract them by forcing their bevelled inner ends apart when the sleeve is moved axially. Fig. 4 shows a further modification of this form in which the catches are slotted to receive sliding wedges 14 which allow the load to retract them when the cords 12 are pulled. The raising of the wedges rotates arms 15 into the path of the falling cam-member so that the wedges are operated to reset the catches during dumping of the load. As applied to a grab-fork, the cam-carrying member of the coupling is connected to the pivot of the fork and the sleeve carrying the catches is connected to a ciosshead to which the upper arms of the fork are connected by rods, the opening and closing of the fork being effected by the engagement and disengagement of the coupling.
