Abstract
540,082. Grabs. REYNOLDS, E. Sept. 7, 1939, No. 25242. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1938. [Class 78 (iv)] A pivoted slotted lever 17 on the lead frame of a doublechain grab, which is actuated and controlled directly by the joint action of the hoisting and opening ropes, permits lowering with the buckets open. When the grab rests on the heap of material, the lever 17 falls over by gravity into the position shown in Fig. 5 in which the button 20 passes freely through the slot when the hoisting rope 19 is tensioned to close the buckets and hoist the grab. On transferring the pull to the opening rope 23 and paying out the hoisting-rope to discharge the load the lever 17 is swung about the pivot 26. In this position the button 20 can pass downwards through the slot as the buckets open, but is arrested when the hoisting-rope is re-tensioned. Thus the grab can be lowered with open buckets by paying out both ropes 19, 23 under tension until it rests on the heap, after which the cycle of operations is repeated.
