Abstract

Grab-buckets.-Relates to grabs of the type in which the bucket halves do not come together when the grab is closed, the closing being effected by an auxiliary stirrup, and consists in giving to the movement of the stirrup a lead in advance of the opening movement of the jaws and a lag during the closing movement. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the stirrup a is pivoted to one of the bucket members and is also suspended from the grab frame by a rope or chain e. During opening, the stirrup, owing to this double suspension, is given a lead. When the grab is completely open, the catches g, h engage. On closing the grab, the stirrup is not released until the grab is nearly closed, whereupon the hook h engages the lug k, and the stirrup is released. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the stirrup is pivoted to the frame of the grab and has an extension m provided with a counterweight so that the stirrup hangs as shown when free. When the grab jaws are closed, the stirrup a is held in its proper place by a stop o on the bucket adapted to abut against an extension p. When the grab opens, after it has moved a little, the stop o releases the stirrup a, which is swung up, as shown, and remains in this position during the opening and during most of the closing movement. When the grab is nearly closed, the lug o engages the extension p, and the stirrup is moved down.
