Abstract

170,473. Prudden, T. M. Sept. 8, 1920. Ball bearings; spring supports.-In a ballbearing spindle construction for textile machinery having an upper bearing in the plane of the driving- whorl 31, the outer ball race 20 fits freely into a recess 3 in the upper end of the bolster, and is retained by a screwed adjusting-ring 23, seated at 27, 28, or locked by a set-screw. As shown in Fig. 4, thin hardened rings 33, 35 are forced against the ball races to form the wearing surfaces. An extension 37 of the ring 35 enters a recess in the whorl 29 to clamp the ring upon the spindle. The lower ball bearing is cushioned laterally by leather &c. 10 or by spring fingers 12, Fig. 3, formed on a cup member 11. Fibrous packing - material may also be placed between the screw threads of the bolster 14 and a split supporting-collar 15.
