Abstract

120,096. Chapman, F. H. Oct. 27, 1917. Spindle apparatus.- In self-contained spindles which are selfadjusting under an unbalanced load, the spindle 18 carries a hard steel ball race or sleeve 22, the outer part of the bearing being formed by an indented steel sleeve 23, mounted in an upstanding part 24 of the casing 15. The balls are maintained within the race of the sleeve 22 by a second sleeve 26 and the whole bearing is arranged in such a position as to be approximately in line with the pull of the driving-band. The spindle is suspended from the ball bearing and engages in a sleeve bearing 28 capable of lateral oscillation in the socket 16 and cushioned in its movement by the lubricating oil which fills the socket or by other means as by a sleeve 40 of woollen cloth &c. The socket 16 is prevented from rotating by a key 30 formed on the outer sleeve 23 of the ball bearing; it is provided with a side passage 33, 34 for the admission of oil and to maintain the level of the oil above that of the ball bearing, and the spindle is provided with a disk or cap 39 to prevent oil from creeping up to the underside of the whorl.
