Abstract

170,406. Ohborg, J. F. O. July 20, 1920. Vices. - In quick-adjustment vices of the kind in which a part-nut is brought into or out of engagement with the adjusting-screw by means of a cam on a sleeve rotatably mounted on the screw, when the latter is rotated, the rotation of the sleeve is effected by two helical springs enclosed between the head of the screw and a loose collar disposed thereon respectively and the sleeve, one of the springs tending to coil up in each direction of operation of the screw, thereby rotating the sleeve in a corresponding direction. A part-nut 5 is fixed by a pin 6 to a casing 4 formed with an internal cam-surface engaging a cam 9 on a sleeve 8 cut away to allow for the nut 5, and encircling the adjusting-screw 7. A righthanded spring 12 is enclosed between the end of the sleeve 8 and a collar 14 on the screw 7, and a left-handed spring 13 is enclosed between a collar 15 on the sleeve 8 and a loose disc 16 mounted on the collar 14. On rotating the screw 7 to the left, the friction between the spring 12 and its abutments causes it to coil up so that the sleeve 8 is gripped and turned and the nut 5 released. Similarly a reverse rotation of the screw with the addition. of longitudinal pressure against it coils up the spring 13. and re-engages the nut 5. The inner end of the sleeve 8 turns in a groove 11 in a disc 10 loosely mounted in a recess 24 in the end of the slide 3 carrying the movable jaw 2. The vice as a whole is pivotally mounted.
