Abstract

169,018. Redfern, C. G., (Porter, J. K., and Emrick, B. R.). June 18, 1920 Reciprocating - cylinder pumps.-In a deep-well pump of the type in which the barrel is reciprocated by means of the discharge pipe on a stationary plunger, the liquid pressure is utilized for compressing the packing, the stuffing-box being secured to the end of the barrel by a union. The packing j is contained in a stuffing-box h, tapered at the lower end, and secured to the barrel by a union i. The liquid is admitted to the box through perforations in a. bush k screwed into the union i. Bushes m and l may be placed above and below the packing. When the entire pump is lifted, a cap p on an extension o of the stuffing- box engages the union c connecting the plunger to the inlet pipe. In a modification, the bush k is dispensed with and the washer m is replaced by a cylinder, the union i being made of the same bore as the stuffing-box. When the pump is lifted, the head of the plunger engages the cylinder and assists in the dislodgment of sand. The bush l is also replaced by a bush in the opening at the bottom of the stuffing-box.
