Abstract

168,637. Rees, E. S. G. May 25, 1920. Screw propellers; rudders; steering-gear; submarines, special apparatus for.-Relates to screw propellers for water or air craft with augmenter tubes and manoeuvring pallets of the kind described in Specifications 124,047 and 141,445, and consists in shaping the rear edges of the pallets so that they contact over an angular range of movement, in placing the axes of the pallets inside the tube, and in using a yielding clutch or spring in the pallet-actuating gear. The manoeuvring duct a, Fig. 2, is circular at the propeller end and merges into a square section at the other, the top and bottom walls providing pivot bearings for the pallets d, e, the pivots being connected to the pallets by arms d<1>, e<1> and having steering posts which pass up through the ship to arms g<1>. The rear edges of the pallets are curved at i so that they remain in contact over wide angular movement. Sectors h are attached to the steering arms g<1> through yielding clutch members and are actuated by cables k from drums j each having a wheel j<1>. The drums are normally coupled by a clutch for joint operation but can b declutched for separate operation. Springs connected to the arms g<1> normally keep the pallets in the open position flush with the side walls of the augmenter tubes. For aeroplanes or submarines, the pallets may also be mounted on horizontal axes.
