The heat-conductor may consist of a gas under pressure or mercury 5 in a sealed vessel 4 surrounding the electrodes 2, 3, or of a mass of quartz or porcelain, or a metal envelope, expansible or not, or a series of wires, which may be enclosed in a matrix, A single heat-conductor may be arranged common to several lamps, or two envelopes, each surrounding an electrode, may be connected by metal rods or a conducting liquid.
