Starting, facilitating.-For priming purposes the suction sides of pumps on a ship are connected to an air pump, and means are provided to prevent water from flowing from the working pumps to the air-pumps. The general service pump d, sanitary pump e, ballast pump f, and bilge pump g are of the centrifugal type, and the general service pump k of the reciprocating type; the suction side of each is connected by pipes m, n - - q to the header h. The header is connected to the air pump a by a pipe c which is taken up thirty-four feet above the header to prevent the flow of water to the pump a. Where the pumps are dealing with liquids which should not enter different pumps, the header may be thirty-four feet above the pumps. In a modification, a float in the header may operate a valve to admit air to prevent the liquid from rising above a predetermined level; or, as shown in Fig. 4, a float t may close the valve j between the header and the pipe c. In another modification, a similar valve may be placed in each pipe m - - q. A cock w is placed on each of the pipes so that each pump can be connected to or disconnected from the header.
