Abstract

164,733. Scherl (nee Sendler), A. M., (Representative of Scherl, R.). June 14, 1920, [Convention date]. Hopper wagons; tip-wagons; sides and floors.- Relates to flat-bottomed goods wagons wherein the divided bottom is adapted to be turned up to form a ridge to convert the vehicle into a self-discharging wagon, and consists in forming the under parts of the sides so that they may be turned inwardly to form, either alone or in conjunction with the turned in parts of the bottom, a hoppershaped load space. The bottom may consist of a fixed middle part, Fig. 1, and two hinged side parts d, d<1>. Outer side-parts c, c<1> are hinged to the parts d, d' and to hinged lower walls b, b<1>. By pressing these walls inwards the parts d, d<1> are turned inwards to meet, and parts b, c and b<1>, c<1> then come into alignment and are held by pivoted arms s, s<1> and links h, h<1> The several parts may be locked together at m, Fig. 3, and discharge may be effected through hinged or sliding sections of the parts c, c<1>, either to the side over shoots e, e' or downwards through hinged parts of the ridge d, d<1>. Fig. 5 shows a lorry with a two-part bottom, the parts d, d<1> being swung over until their outer edges contact, bring- ing with them the parts b, c, b<1>, c', which are then supported by spring-pressed arms s, s'. The inner edges of the bottom at the same time move outwards to connect the shoots e, e'. Cheeks y, y<1> may be turned up to increase the load space. The walls b, b<1>, Fig. 9, may meet at the ridge, the parts y, y<1> sliding in guides to allow the movement, and the wagon body may be supported for tipping by detachable connections L, L<1> to the frame. The upper wall y then falls outwards to act as a shoot. Instead of the parts y, y<1> sliding, the walls may be in three parts pivoted together to allow of their inward movement, struts being provided to support the bottom. The sides may alternatively rest against abutments in the outer ends of the bottom parts, and cross-ties within the body may be used to support the bottom. Fig. 15 shows a wagon with roof members l, l<1> moved to raise the side walls, and bottom members d, d', the junction of which is raised. The side members have rollers r at their lower ends normally locked to the bottom. When released these members move by their own weight to the apex of the ridge, the rollers moving along a suitable track. End flaps z may raise the ends walls.
