Abstract

Riveting.-A self-contained hydraulic riveter of the horseshoe type comprises an internal-combustion engine driving a variable-delivery pump supplying oil to a riveting-cylinder and a smaller cylinder for returning the tool. The engine 5, Fig. 1, and pump 6 are carried by a bracket 4 at one side of the machine and tanks 8, 10 for fuel, oil, &c. at the other. Pipes 11, 12 supply oil from the pump to the small and large cylinders respectively. An automatic valve 14 controls the flow of oil to and from the tank 10 according to which cylinder is being filled. When the large cylinder is being filled through the pipe 12 the pressure in the passage 19 in the valve 14 acting on the valve 21 closes it and opens the valve 22 so that oil from the tank 10 passes through the pipe 16 and past the valve 22 to the passage 20 and through the pipe 11 to the suction side of the pump to compensate for the difference in the volumes of the cylinders. When the small cylinder is being filled the pressure in the passage 20 closes the valve 22 and opens the valve 21 to allow the excess exhaust from the larger cylinder to flow into the tank 10.
