Driving.-The shaft m of a centrifugal machine is driven by an electric motor a, supplied with direct or alternating current, through a centrifugal clutch. The spider h on the motor shaft g carries swinging or sliding blocks i which are thrown outwards to engage the clutch ring j clamped to the end of the shaft m. An unloader plough w is mounted on a bracket on the basket casing u and is raised or lowered by a rack and pinion. A band brake q is also provided. When the machine is used for drying sugar the motor runs at full speed; when unloading, the motor runs at half speed, and the plough engages the material in the basket, causes the clutch to slip and so reduces the basket speed to a suitable value.
