Abstract

162,020. Harrison, W. W. Dee. 6, 1919. Hoods.-Foldable hood fittings for vehicles comprise parts operating in conjunction with the rear pillars or main prop to produce a parallel ruler-like action, and arms such as h<2>, l, or k, a link i, and bars such as e, g connecting these parts to each other and to an upwardly swinging forward cant-rail whereby, in the position in which the hood is fully closed, the fittings automatically become locked against being pulled or pushed back by a straight-line movement, without the use of locking stretcher bars. Hingedly secured to the body of the vehicle are a middle pillar c, Fig. 1, and a rear pillar a, which are hingedly connected together by the bar e supporting a rear cant-rail d and hinged at g<2> to the bar g carrying a forward cant-rail. A bar h is fixed to the pillar a and, extending above it, forms an arm h<2> hinged to a link i pivoted to a second arm k and a second link j, the other end of which is pivoted to a third arm l at j<2>. The arm l, which is pivoted to the bar e at l<3>, is connected by a link m to the bar g at m<2>. In the closed position, the joints m<2> and j<2> are respectively below the joints g<2>, l<3> so that the hood is locked in that position. In a modification, the pillar c is behind the joint g<2>, the link i is pivoted to the arm l and the arm k and link j are dispensed with. In another form, the bar h, Fig. 5, is pivoted to the body close to the hinge of a secondary prop c pivoted at e<3> to a rearward extension of the bar e. In a further arrangement, the secondary prop c, Fig. 7, pivoted to the bar e is hinged at its lower end to a link mounted on thepivot of the main prop a. A spring extension bar may be used to assist the folding or unfolding of the hood. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 140,149 and 158,404.
