Packing, metallic; followers, bushes, and the like.-Packing for the piston-rods of locomotives &c. consists of a segmental lead or other soft-metal ring 2, with a sheathing 11 of copper &c., except on its wearing surface. The ring may be formed with a conical end, which is pressed against a conical bush 5 bv a gland 3 and follower 4, the packing being enclosed in a casing ring 6. The lead &c. ring may be cast into its sheathing, or the sheathing may be pressed round the ring. The ring is afterwards divided into halves by inclined cuts.
