Piston packing. - A piston-ring casting is made of greater diameter than the finished ring and with a widened outer periphery, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, so that, in machining the ring to its final form, the chilled and hardened surface metal is removed from the outer periphery 14 and from the sides 13 near the outer periphery. Alternatively, the rings may be cut from a cylinder 14, Fig. 10, of larger diameter than the finished rings and having internal grooves 15 in the planes in which the cylinder is divided.
