Pliers.-A plier-like tool for attaching the identification plates described in Specification 161,270, [Class 146 (ii), Stationery &c.], to the ears of animals is provided with oppositely disposed pins in the jaws, one pin fitting a recess in the fastening-pin of a plate, while the other pin fits into a hole in the plate and is yieldingly mounted in its jaw so that it is pressed back by the fastening-pin and subsequently flattens the end of the latter so as to secure the identification plate which, owing to the spring-mounted pin, is retained in the tool during the operation. Two forms of tool are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 respectively, each having oppositely-disposed pins 12, 13, the former adapted to fit into an opening in the end of the fastening-pin, and the latter passing through a hole in the plate and spring mounted in a hollow block 14 fixed in one of the jaws, a groove in its end engaging the conical end of the fastening-pin, so that when the handles of the tool are pressed together the pin 13 is first pressed to the bottom of the block and then burs over the end of the fastening-pin. The tool shown in Fig. 1 comprises a frame 7 provided with a handle 8, a rod 11 integral with the pin 12 and slidably operated by a toothed lever 9 engaged a rack on the rod, and a spring 17 normally separating the handles. In the tool shown in Fig. 2, a rod 20 integral with the pin 12 is provided with a knob 23, and is pressed down against a spring 21 by a pivoted lever 22 engaging the knob.
