Abstract

1,241,086. Pliers. W.L.SARVIE. 29 Jan., 1969, No. 4849/69. Heading B4W. [Also in Division B3] A hand tool such as pliers 10 has a locking mechanism for locking the jaws thereof in a predetermined relation, the mechanism comprising a curved shank 19 projecting through an aperture 23 in arm 11 and a locking member 25 having an aperture through which shank 19 projects and having a portion 27 which protrudes through a hole 24 in an arm 21. The aperture in member 25 has sharp arcuate edge portions 29a, 29b which are offset axially along the aperture and which grip the shank 19 through the action of a spring 30. Release of the locking mechanism is by moving end 28 of member 25 against the action of the spring. Portions 27 of the member 25 may be shaped as shown in Fig. 12 to allow rocking of the member 25 to prevent possible binding of shank 19 in aperture 23. Alternatively portion 27 may be flat and the upper edge of the hole 24 shaped to have a downward projection, Fig. 13 (not shown). The outer end of portion 27 may be slightly enlarged to prevent disengagement between member 25 and arm 21. A method of stamping and forming the handles is described.
