Abstract

161,222. Milne, S. Nov. 24, 1919. Driving-mechanism.-In driving paper-making and like machines wherein several members or units are each driven in harmony with the other members and wherein some or all require to move at different rates of speed compared with others, a steam engine a running at practically constant speed drives a dynamo by which current of variable voltage is supplied to variable speed motors b<1> to b<9>, preferably overhead, which drive the variable speed members of the paper machine through belts, ropes or the like, the speed relation being maintained by means of a master motor shaft g to which the several units are connected, and the relative speed ratios maintained constant by regulating-mechanism comprising differential gearing such as that described in Specification 22897/14. The constant speed parts, back shafting, pumps, &c. are driven direct from the engine by belts, ropes, &c., or by motors supplied with current by a dynamo driven by the steam engine, and the engine is placed near the drying end of the machine so that the exhaust steam can be used efficiently. Large sections such as the drying section may be driven from one motor by means of two or more belts.
